13 Houses Jubilee Project of Hope N. 1
St Vincent Mews, owned and operated by Depaul UK, is part of the 13 Houses Campaign Jubilee Project. It is among the 13 countries whose keys have been blessed by Pope Francis in November 2024. The property houses up to 12 adults with experience of rough sleeping and complex needs, including mental health challenges and substance abuse.
The facility consists of three connected houses, offering bright, modern rooms and a roof terrace. A dedicated team provides 24-hour support to help residents address their challenges and work towards independent living. Today, we share the story of Sofiane, a 49-year-old undocumented immigrant from Algeria who has lived on the streets of London since 2003. He has recently moved into St. Vincent Mews, finding a supportive environment tailored to individuals with similar experiences.
“When I arrived here, it was very hard. I didn’t speak English at that time. I got no papers, no name, no ID. I didn’t know what to do or where to go. Do I turn left or right? I didn’t know what to withhold or what to talk about. I was sleeping with the foxes and rats and in the grass when it snowed. It was a disaster, to be honest. A lot of bad things happened. That’s when I started drinking and gambling heavily.”.
Sofiane was homeless until 2022, sometimes living on the streets, sometimes staying in someone’s house or overnight at parties, and often moving around the city. He was unable to get any formal support because of his undocumented status. This long-term lifestyle, together with mental health struggles, drinking, and gambling addictions, meant Sofiane had become quite unwell.
Thankfully today, Sofiane has finally gained settled status and been able to access the medical support he needs and temporary accommodation in the UK. In September 2024, he was given a room of his own at Depaul UK’s newest accommodation service, St Vincent Mews in Haringey, where he is also receiving help with his gambling addiction. Sofiane can stay at the property for two to three years before hopefully moving to his own apartment.
Speaking about his new home, Sofiane said: “Before everything was fight, fight, suffer, and fight. Here it is so beautiful. I feel at home. No one disturbs me. I have my own room with a beautiful big window. It’s nice and calm, and I feel happy. I’ve even started to cook again. This place is like medicine, to be honest. I want to stay here forever”.
