13 Houses Jubilee Project of Hope No. 3
From an interview with Father Mario Sirica, President of the Locanda del Samaritano
and coordinator of the ‘Abbà-Father’ project
In the heart of Catania and among the solidarity initiatives directed at the most vulnerable, the ‘Abba Father’ project was born. This initiative, part of the “13 Houses” Jubilee project, aims to provide an opportunity for a fresh start for separated fathers facing economic and housing difficulties. The idea comes from a careful analysis of the territory and from listening to the people who turn to the day center every day seeking support. The goal is not only to provide temporary shelter, but also to promote the autonomy and psychological well-being of the beneficiaries, foster healthy relationships between fathers and their children, and support social reintegration.
An ever-growing need
Over time, through the day center, it has emerged that many separated fathers find themselves in extreme precariousness, despite having jobs. Between alimony payments and insufficient wages, some can barely cover daily expenses. Others, without work, risk ending up on the streets. One emblematic case is that of a separated teacher who, unable to afford rent, transformed a garage that was offered by a friend into a refuge., A desk was built from pallets so that he could continue preparing his lessons. Stories like this highlight the need for dignified solutions for people who, despite working, find themselves in situations of severe hardship.

An uplifting concrete and innovative project
‘Abba Father’, born within the framework of the “13 Houses” Jubilee project, aims to offer stable accommodation to these fathers in difficulty. The house that will host the project has been made available by the Daughters of Charity and represents a model of collaboration among different entities within the Vincentian Family. Volunteers, missionary sisters, and many community members who have decided to support the project with their commitment are part of this initiative.
But the idea doesn’t stop there. The available area covers 3,000 square meters, with the future goal of creating an “Agora of Charity” — a place where various associations can collaborate to meet the emerging needs of society. Among upcoming projects, the plan includes spaces for cancer patients undergoing treatment, areas for young volunteers, and even a holiday home for tourists – this will not only financially contribute to the project, but also offer work opportunities for people in difficulty.
Additionally, two important initiatives are already in place: the ‘Locanda del Samaritano’, offering temporary housing for homeless men and women, and the ‘Casa Lumière’, a refuge for women who are survivors of violence. These projects aim to provide practical support to those in need while fostering a community built on collaboration and mutual aid.
A sign of hope: the Holy Father’s key in Catania
A particularly significant moment for the ‘Abba Father’ project occurred on March 19, when one of the 13 keys blessed in 2024 by Pope Francis on the World Day of the Poor arrived in Catania. This symbol of welcome and solidarity was delivered as a sign of the Vincentian Family’s commitment to offering a home and an opportunity for redemption to those in difficulty. Father Mario Sirica emphasized the importance of this event, stating that “this key represents much more than just an object: it is a sign of openness and hope for those who have lost everything.” The ceremony involved the entire Catanese community, further strengthening the connection with the project.

A systemic change
Father Mario Sirica, the project’s coordinator, emphasizes the importance of an approach that goes beyond immediate assistance: “I don’t want to give you fish, but teach you how to fish.” The goal is to create paths to autonomy and dignity for those in difficulty through a model based on generosity and community support, without public contracts. For this reason, the involvement of benefactors and volunteers is essential, as is transparency in managing resources.
This initiative also aims to change the perception of poverty: it is not only about those living on the streets but also about those who, due to adverse circumstances, find themselves without a safe place to live. “This project is a work of the whole city, not just ours,” says Father Sirica, inviting the community to feel like an active part of the change.
A replicable model
For those who wish to start a similar initiative, Father Mario’s advice is clear: work together, involve people and institutions, and always operate with transparency. The trust and support of the community are crucial for creating real and lasting change. The ‘Abba Father’ project, with its innovative and systemic approach, represents an example of how to effectively address new forms of poverty, restoring dignity and hope to those in need.
